Shadows Of The Empire by Steve Perry

Shadows Of The empire takes place 3.5 years after the battle of Yavin (3.5ABY)

Plot

With Han frozen in carbonite Luke, Leia and Lando set out to get him back from the hands of Boba Fett. Their search for Han is disturbed by Darth Vader and the mysterious Black Sun crime lord Prince Xizor. Both Vader and Xizor seek to please the Emperor by capturing Luke.

This adventure takes the characters to various places in the galaxy with an exciting climax on Coruscant.

Did you like it?
Yes. This is a very entertaining story.

Especially because of all of the characters we know from the movies.

It's very interesting to read about Xizor and the Black Sun, it really gives you a good view on the criminal organization.

So?
It's a story you must read, it's entertaining and it leads up to the final movie.

Rating 9/10

Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster

The Splinter of the Mind's Eye takes place 2 years after the battle of Yavin (2ABY) and Episode 3.

Plot

Luke, Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2 crash-land on a planet called Mimban while on their way to meet with potential rebels on the planet Circarpous IV.

Mimbaan is a jungle planet occupied by Imperial forces. The Imperials exploit a number of mines on the planet.

During their atempt to escape the planet Luke and Leia meet a semi force sensetive called Hala. Hala claims to know the werabouts of a mysterious object that could greatly increase the power of any Force user. She carries a small splinter of the object with her and it convinces Luke and Leia to go search for the rest of it.

In their search for the object they have to deal with the Imperials, native species, and an encounter with Darth Vader.

Did you like it?
The story is very simple and it does not really go deep into anything.

At the time of writing the story the writer did not yet know that Luke and Leia are twins. Luke, unawere of their true relation, is clearly in love with Leia.

I found out that this story was originally written as a scrypt for a potential tv-movie. This explains the simplicity of the story.

So?
For the hardcore Star Wars fan this book is a must have, for the simple fact that it is the first Star Wars novel.

If you have never read Star Wars Novels you should read something else becouse it could scare you away from the rest of the novels. Start with some of Timothy Zahn's work.

Its is not the best story but it has sentimental value.
Rating: 5/10
